White on White

Decorating your home with white interiors is timeless, crisp and fresh and can brighten up any room. An all white scheme looks inviting, effortless and gives the illusion of a larger space and highlights everything around it. White is a very versatile colour and is a great starting point as it can suit any taste or style, from modern to traditional and anything in between. We’ve put together a few pointers to get you started on the white trend.

Picking the right white
White serves as a canvas for anything but white also has a lot of varying shades with different undertones. If you want a crisp modern look, bright whites give the space extra sharpness and adding furnishings with simple lines, smooth surface and metallic’s will tie this look together. Warm whites soften areas and add a sense of comfort and romance and work well with plenty of detail such as lace and marble.White can also be paired with pastels for a soft feminine feel or go for shiny fabrics to add glamour and elegance to a room. Shiny apricot, peach or creams are great combinations.

Add Texture
To avoid a bland all white colour scheme, adding different textures is vital. Add one colour to a white palette, a dark accent creates a clean and sophisticated look and creates depth. Warm whites work best with cool tones such as chalk grey and ice tones. Choosing textured furnishings and objects in different tones is also key to creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Paint wooden floorboards in a cold white or add a white wash to reveal glimpses of the timber tones and texture and create a beautiful rustic feel to your home.

Accessorise
Furnishings and decorative objects play a huge role, especially with an all white scheme as everything stands out, so make sure its worth looking at. Go for pieces that are striking and different to add impact and a wow factor to your living space. One of the great advantages of white is that you can constantly create new looks without updating the whole room. Accessorise with printed throw pillows and play with different surfaces to create an interested and detailed interior. Anytime you feel that the room needs a makeover, add bold accents or different patterns.

Bathroom Makeover

Bathrooms are gaining more and more attention in the interior design world, with homeowners opting for bigger and more luxurious bathroom spaces. More designers are entering the bathroom field to produce, sleek, streamlined designs that are practical, stylish and attractive.
Bathrooms can be a design and decorating challenge but with adequate light, good ventilation, plenty of storage and our décor tips you can transform your bathroom into a beautiful room without a full-scale renovation.

Tip 1: Smart storage.
For small bathrooms especially, the most important key to good bathroom décor is storage and using smart features that add style, don’t take up a lot of space and even make the room look larger. Mirrored cabinets are a great option for disguised built in storage that adds a feeling of spaciousness and suits any décor style and colour scheme.  For a simplistic look, woven baskets or wooden storage holders look great with monochrome interiors and create a natural, calm and beach vibe to your room.

Tip 2: Let the light in
If any room needs a good dose of natural light, it is the bathroom. Not only does it keep the room healthy, it is a simple way to enhance the space and light up the room. A great tip is to install your mirror opposite your window, to bounce the light around the room.  Any space will seem larger if its lighter and brighter so take full advantage of natural light and opt for a white or neutral colour scheme.

Tip 3: Focal point
Upgrading any rooms’ focal point is a quick way to transform a space without a full room renovation. For your bathroom, the first step is working it where you want the focus to be, on your bath, shower or basin. Once you’ve decided, invest in a replacement piece that will create a new look and feel to the room.

Tip 4: Personal Touch

The bathroom no longer has to be a storage space or serve as just a necessity. Make a personal statement in your bathroom with your favourite perfume bottles, candles and vintage vases on a beautiful tray. Our Lexington Mirror Tray is the perfect piece to create this look teamed with our Green Living range of scented candles to create relaxed living.

Feng Shui

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese philosophy, which believes that the positioning and physical characteristics of a home affect the fortunes of the owner. Each spot in your home is associated with a different aspect of your life. By placing certain items in certain zones, some have symbolic power; others have a literal connection to the area. For making every room in your house calm and happy, here’s a guide:

1. Clear clutter
Getting rid of any clutter in your home is an essential in creating harmonious house energy. Mess is the number one enemy of Feng Shui and blocks positive energy from entering.

2. Good quality air and light
These two elements are an essential for good Feng Shui energy in your home. In Feng Shui, the windows are the eyes of a home so bring clarity to the space by opening windows often or use an air-purifier. It’s important to let in as much natural light as possible in your home.

3. Fix or throw out broken things
These items are impediments to vitality Broken things attract being broke or having a broken body, associated with health issues and are strong sources of negative energy.

4. Define the bagua/energy map of your home
The bagua of your home acts as a clear map as to which areas of your home are connected to specific areas of your life. For example, the entryway into your home is associated with career and should be as well lit as possible.

Bagua is the foundation of Feng Shui as it assigns different energies to different directions. To start, create a grid with nine squares to fit your home plan and align the lower row of your grid with your main entrance door. Assign each of the squares to the Feng Shui areas below. For example, the lower part is always aligned with the front door and will either symbolize knowledge, career or friends and travel.  Each area also has specific colours and tones that benefit the specific Bangua.

Once these areas are established in your home, you can start applying Feng Shui techniques and make changes to improve the energy needed in each specific Bangua area.
